If you guys can remember when cropped top was a thing and singing about positivity then TLC is your thing.
The American girl group which was coined from T- T-boz (Tionne Watkins), L-Left eye ( Lisa Lopez), C- chilli ( Rozanda Thomas). Lisa Pebbles was their brand Manager.
It was founded in 1990, they gave an RnB, hiphop, funk, sexy, sassy and sultry kind of vibe. Their songs spoke to mature minds.
the album crazy sexy cool. That birth Waterfalls was released in 1994. The song was the third single in that album and was officially released in May 29, 1995.
Waterfalls was an international hit that shone the light on the dangers of illegal drug trade, promiscuity and HIV/AIDS.
The song spent 7 weeks on number one on the billboard 100. The song was number 2 on the billboard in 1995 year-end chat. Waterfalls also peaked at number one in New Zealand and Switzerland.
Waterfalls won 2 grammy nominations at the 38th annual grammy awards in 1996 for record of the year and best pop performance by a duo, group with vocals.
The music video interpreted the song well. The theme of the song was very important yet relatable. The video stayed at the top of MTV video monitor chart for over a month, making TLC the first act to ever achieve this feat.
All the group members did their thing and Left eye did her rap verse so well. It wasnt like any other rap, as the lyrics were strong, deep and true. A sort of encouragement to the downcast.
Lefteye wrote the song, alonside Marqueze Etherideshe and organised Noize produced it. She said in an interview that it was straight from the heart, she was so proud of the song before her demise in 2002 in a car accident, RIP to a queen.
There were background vocals done by Debra Killings and Cee-lo-green, while the improvised bass line was provided by Marquis Remarqable.
The TLC song shares elements with paul Mccartney’s song of the same name which open lines were “ Dont go jumping waterfalls, please keep to the lake”. The video was crisp, clear, and beautiful. We couldnt get enough of the beautiful background, outfit, dance moves, voices, actors in the song, and the vibe.
They took an award from the MTV video Music Awards in 1995, including top honors for video of the year, TLC was the first American act to ever receive this trophy.
